The Final JourneyWe make the "final journey" for your media from analog to the digital domain as accurate as possible. There are multiple reel sizes and recording formats and it's important to match the tape with the proper playback machine. For example 1/4" tape reel sizes are 3", 5", 7", 10" and 12" . . speeds are (Inches per second {IPS}) 1 7/8, 3 3/4, 7 1/2 and 15 . . . formats are full track, mono half track, stereo half track, 1/4 track, 4 track, 4 tracks mono. There are equally as many options for 1/2", 1" and 2" multitrack tapes as well.
Repair_Restoring
saving your legacyShown above is a worst case scenario where an old tape has been wound too tightly and stored in an unregulated environment. The black in the center is the backcoating from the adjacent wrap of tape. They become stuck together in time and become irrepairably damaged. Tapes are disintegrating by the minute so the sooner you transfer them the better chance of a successful transfer you will have. We have multiple proceedures to allow successful transfers of compromised tape. We can also repair broken tapes of all kinds..
Enhancement_Mixing
better than the originalThere are a lot of benefits to post-transfer processing. We can do noise reduction to take out hums, buzzes and ambience in the original recording. We can take a recording of a live stereo performance from 1978 and actually make the singer louder or the drums quieter. On a more nerdy topic, head alignment is imperative to good high frequency reproduction. Many consumer recorders drift from standard but after we digitize we can do computer aided head alignment (azimuth adjustment) as well as equilization and level matching between channels. On multitrack tapes we can do a remix using all the benefits of digital technology.

Consumer and BroadcastOn the way to digital video the world went through dozens and dozens of video formats. To the consumer Betamax and VHS were a mainstay . . until Hi8 and DVCam came along! The pros began with quad 2" then to "Type C" 1 Inch, U-Matic, Betacam and Digibeta . . until HDV Cameras. Honestly, we don't have them all but we have a lot of them and we're adding more all the time. No matter what the format, the tapes are useless to you if you can't enjoy the content.!
Format Options
Taylored for your needsThere are as many different digital formats and codecs as there are tape formats! We can provide you with whatever you need from a DVD to uncompressed files. The deliverables change quite a bit depending on the format. We can digitize and provide an MP4 uploaded to our server for you to download. The uncompressed formats require more drive space and will require an external drive.
Editing_Enhancements
The best your video can beFrom editing specific sections, to correcting and enhancing the color, to improving the video image and processing the audio, we can make your old media look and sound as good as it can be! If you'd like titles or a composited video of just certain segments . . or a compilation of multiple tapes into one . . . we can do all that as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the best way to send my tapes?
We have had good luck with USPS flat rate shipping. The large boxes are perfect for large audio and video reels. Please get a tracking number so you can see when your tapes arrive. It's also a great idea to send us the tracking number as well so we know when to expect delivery. We'll contact you when they arrive.
-
Do you send my tapes back?
We will if you want them. If you do want them back, we put them in the same box they came in and pass the shipping cost on to you. If you do not want them, we hold them until you look at the transferred files and verify the digital files play properly for you. At that point we can dispose of the old tapes.
-
How do I get my digitized files?
That depends on whether you have audio files or video files. Audio files are easily uploaded to our server for your download. CD disks are also available and returned to you via media mail. (postage is added to your invoice) Video on the other hand can take up a lot of drive spaceif you are wanting some of the brodcast uncompressed formats. Our experience is since all of these formats are natively SD (standard definition) it's almost impossible to see any difference in quality between Prores codec (149 Gb per hour) and Uncompressed (1.19 TB per hour). If you are transferring consumer formats like VHS and Betamax the final files can be made into a DVD and sent to you, or exported to an MP4 file that can be downloaded from our server. A quick opinion in the "for what it's worth" department: quickly DVD and CD disks have become an outdated format with fewer players available. Those formats could be just trading one obsolete format for another "soon to be" outdated format.
-
What kind and size drive should I send for my files?
If you need your files on a drive, first pick a drive that is what you need for your computer and software. We can transfer on to any drive. To determine how big a drive you need the easiest way to figure it is to use the free Aja Data Calculator available here.AJA Data Calculator

What happens if one of my tapes won't play properly?
First of all, if your tape is not able to be played you will not be charged for the transfer. But . . and this is a good "but", likely with our expertise we can get it to play. We first will determine the reason it won't play. Both audio and video tape can actually become gummy from environment and time. When this happens the tape becomes either glued to the adjacent wrap of tape and tears and breaks the tape when played (called "blocking"), or the gummy tape oxide comes off on the tape guides and tape heads causing the tape to stop the machine. Other possibilities are simply a broken tape or the tape has mold on it. We can resolve most issues and of course it's an extra fee. Before we do anything, if we find a tape that will not play we'll notify you immediately with our evaluation, cost for the solution and liklihood of it being successful. If we cannot successfully transfer your damaged tape we will only charge for the repair/restoration attempt.
-
Do you do any processing on my tapes while transferring?
If your video tape has color bars and tone on it we'll set up the machine to that. Most video machines have a time base corrector that will help stability and fix many tape dropouts. If your tape doesn't have bars and tone we'll adjust levels for both as best we can get. Many audio tapes have tones and we'll set our machine to those. Tapes with no tone we adjust levels as accurately as possible.
-
Can you make my video tape look and sound better?
Usually we can. We can correct color that is not right for whatever reason. We can can adjust the black levels to give your image that rich look we're all so used to. We have video noise reduction to take out "snow" on your image. As for audio, we can adjust equalization, levelsl and dynamic levels. We can reduce ambience or remove hums, buzzes and some distortions. If it's music we can raise or lower levels of individual musical elements like vocals, drums, bass etc. We won't do any of this without contacting you and letting you know what we can do and what it will cost. It's all way cheaper than you could image because it's all done on our computers so it's not real time like transferring is.
-
Can you enhance the sound of my audio tape?
Yes we can. Generally if it's a studio master recording we don't want to alter it. On most recordings we can really help the sound. We can smooth out the frequency response, control the dynamic range, remove those annoying sssss sounds (sibilance), remove the rumble of air conditioning or trucks, add clarity through aural exciters and remove square wave distortion. By taking a mono recording and running through our stereo simulator we can allow things to be heard that were previously buried. If it's music we can raise or lower levels of individual musical elements like vocals, drums, bass etc.. We contact you if we think we could improve your audio. Again, it's a lot cheaper than you can imaginesince it's not real time like transferring is.
-
Do you mix my multitrack tape or do you send me the individual tracks?
Our work flow is to digitize all the tracks on your tape at once with no additional processing. All the tracks start at exactly the same time so you can drop them into your DAW and they will all be in sync and ready to mix. If you'd like us to mix your multitrack we'll give you a price. This is done by studio owner Greg Rike who has been mixing for over 4 decades. You won't be disappoined - and can make changes before you get the final master. We contact you if we think we could improve your audio.
